When I just want to do something simple, I make a scull in a novelty yarn. This is a fine merino/nylon yarn that has been fluffed up. The colors are muted and pretty. I used the sage, olive, and pink. I made it 10 inches long so you can pull it down or leave it up. It fit head sizes 20-22.
